PAN Hsin-Hua

The Seventh Genre: Habitat/Zoo/National Park



On the one hand, I create the mottled texture of ancient murals on paper, on the other hand I add new themes inspired by the surroundings, to reshape them and transform them into my paintings. I discard the logical and commonly used perspective and return to the spatial concept used in ancient maps. In this way, scenes from nature, figures, birds, animals, insects and fish, extravaganza flowers and plants, religious and folklore patterns can all be included in the painting beyond the legit rules.

Unlike the ideal landscape that people imagine or realize, I try to combine both traditional and contemporary elements to create an unrealistic, self-existent, and paradisiacal scenes. In such a scene, common figures and various objects are juxtaposed. I deliberately make the figures act seriously, imitating certain imagery and situation in classic allusions or poems in a slightly playful way. The children’s serious imitation of adult-like posture makes the works seem to be both familiar and strange. The boundary between classic-styled images and the reality becomes blurry as if the viewer is reading a contemporary work that is a mixture of the old and the new.

Profile

Born in Taimali, Taitung, in 1966, and graduated from Department of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts in 1991. He majored in ink painting and minored in art theory and earned a B.F.A. degree. In 2006, he restored his indigenous identity (Payuan). From 2011 to 2015, Pan served as fulltime assistant professor at Department of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts, and now lives and works in Taipei. Pan has held solo exhibitions in Taiwan, Beijing, and New York; his works have been selected to the collections of National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, and Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts.
