The Seventh Genre: Habitat/Zoo/National Park

Humankind is fond of animals and would like to build relationships with them. However, they also need to hunt and eat them. Moreover, humankind cannot live with animals, but they still hope to build zoos in cities to keep animals in captivity for a close relationship with them. We should ponder on such contradictory phenomena. Besides zoos, we can see similar situations in Taiwan’s waned parks. They situate various cement animal statues either with refined finishing or rough finishing, which echo the long-standing pine trees and banyan trees. The artist attempts to replace live animals with the representation of artworks. Due to the immature early production, these malformed animal statues have added a particularly bizarre and intriguing atmosphere to the parks. The artificial landscape is made with cement molds instead of the traditional methods of building a garden with piling put stones and earth. The plain ornaments are located in corners of the park, while the smell and shadow off childhood are still staying in the freckle paint, just like the surrealist painting style.


Sun Pei-Mao was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He graduated in artistic creation at the Taipei National University of the Arts. He spent the latter half of 2016 in an exchange program at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. His works exude a strange ornate beauty, expressing a “movie-like” sense of theatrical tension.
